Another Reality show is looking for contestants. Are you about to be fired from job? Then this show want you.
Two Weeks Notice claims that it will “… take people with unrealized
potential from all walks of life and give them two weeks to completely transform themselves.”
I am doubtful how a TV show can rescue somone who is about to get their “2 weeks notice” or have already been told they have been terminated, to “…productive habits that will let you work to your potential while keeping your job.”
If they sell this show to a network, it’s likely that the viewers just like a good train-wreck of a story; Who will the advertisers be? If the demographic is going to be people who are out of work, or are likely to to be unemployed, how much are they willing to spend? Maybe banks? Insurance? Mental-Health counselors?
Well, if you’ve received YOUR pink slip, or the boss is looking at you funny…. maybe it’s time to apply to be a TV star:

How can I connect the dots between General Mills cereals (Trix, Cheerios, Wheaties, etc.) and anti-Malaria efforts (Malaria no-more, Gates Foundation, and many more)?
Someone (probably my son) put a plastic card on my wife’s desk at home. On the front was a “Trix” rabbit, a Discover Card logo, and a large word “CASH.” It appeared to be a five dollar credit card, complete with account number, holorgram, and expiration date.
I followed the directions on the activation sticker on the front and “activated” the card through the website: www.generalmills.com/wincash
So now I have a $5 “gift card” that acts like a Discover credit card. Where and how do I spend it?
After a bit of consideration on what I could buy for $5 for myself, I went to http://www.malarianomore.org/. Yes, they could take a donation from DiscoverCard; yes, they could accept a donation of $5. But when I entered all the “Credit Card” information, I realized that the card was not in my name; at least not on the imprinted card. It failed validation. Once, twice, three times.
I wasn’t able to donate using this card.
While there are many “Great Photographers”, both contemporary and “classical, there are certain names that I studied in my teens. Many of these are recognizable to the general public such as Ansel Adams.
And then there are photographs which are recognizable, but the creator does not ring a bell.
The prints of these “Heroes of Photography” occasionally go on sale via various channels, one of which is the famous Sothebys auction house.
Sale N08533 will be conducted on March 30, 2009 includes some of the best known photographers, and prints:
- Ansel Adams
- Diane Arbus
- Richard Avedon
- Bill Brandt
- Henri Cartier-Bresson
- Imogen Cunningham
- Alfred Eisenstaedt
- Yousuf Karsh
- Annie Leibovitz
- Robert Mapplethorpe
- Helmut Newton
- Irving Penn
- Edward Steichen
- Alfred Stieglitz
- William Henry Fox Talbot
- Brett Weston
- Edward Weston
- Minor White
Of course I don’t have the $5000 USD and up that these images are expected to fetch. But if I did, wouldn’t it be really, really cool to have an original Ansel Adams print on your wall?

I had a very hectic shoot this past weekend, and of the eight official models, I had one minor. Fret.
The model and her mother were the first to arrive at the studio, so there was at least a cursory opportunity for casual conversation, but there really wasn’t any “demands” by myself or the mom. I realize how important it is for parents to act responsibly for their kids, even for the 17-year old kids that are about to fledge.
This was the first time we had met… so there was no history of trust between us.
This “model mom” couldn’t have been better. There was absoultely no interferance; no suggestions, nothing. I can’t remember a single comment.
But she was there. Every time. Every frame. Each time her daughter stepped on-set, there she was. Just like a responsible parent should be. I assume when the 17-year old model was doing a costume change, that mom was there too… I don’t know; I was locked down on the set the whole session (8 official models, and a few “drive-bys”….)
So THANK YOU model-moms, for being interested and protective of your kids, while being respectful of my craft. I know it’s a delicate balance… The same goes for those friends who ‘escort’ models to new gigs. Photographers who don’t allow escorts should be viewed with some suspeicion. Of COURSE there are exceptions and circumstances where a set visitor is not desireable. I recently advised a model that if her new photographer wouldn’t allow an escort, then she should ask him to email a photo of his driver’s license.
But for minors, that in-studio parent is good all-around for both sides.
Your thoughts?
Do you need to know what size lens to bring with you for a certain shooting situation?
Get to the LENS Calculator page!:
http://www.tawbaware.com/maxlyons/calc.htm
I often go here if I’m going to be shooting a subject of a certain size, or in a room of certain size; that way I can choose what lens I’ll likely to use. Or if I don’t own the right lens, I’ll know which one to rent.
My family and others I know are busy. Very busy. Often we are too busy to stop and enjoy life. Often random events come along that interupt what we are busy at.
We call that a “time suck.”
Certainly there are ways to prioritize and organize your life. For example, I’m currently (Fall 2008) reading a book called “Getting Things Done” which apparently has a whole culture around it. http://www.davidco.com/
Recently on the radio I heard about “LivePerson.com“ Since I was in the car at the time, I used my cellphone and called my Jott service. Using Jott, I had dictated a short note to check into LivePerson.com, and send it to myself. The service transcribes my message (using a real person, I think) and emails me either the message or a link to the message (this time I got a link). Since many factors may make an accurate text transcription hit-or-miss, a recording of your audio is usally available.
LivePerson.com looks like it may be useful similar to eLance.com. eLance lets you find electronic freelancers to bid on a project or work that you have. You get to make the final selection. I have yet to try it, but have seen Tweets from people that have, with mixed results. Like hiring an employee or going to a new ’store’, you don’t always get the results you expect. Works that way with pancake making too.
I’ve learned an expensive lesson. The District Attorney (DA) won’t help you with a bounced check unless certain criteria are met, including getting an ID from the person who’s wrote the check.
Santa Clara County, as well as many other jurisdictions, operates “Bad Check Restitution Program.”
http://www.checkprogram.com/static_websites/santaclaracounty/
From this site you can get the forms to file a “Crime Report” so that the DA can step in and investigate.
There are many exclusions that will prevent the DA from helping you, including:
Post Dated checks
Stop Payment issued
Identity of check writer is unknown
DA’s website: http://santaclara-da.org/portal/site/da/
Of course just because the DA won’t pursue rubber checks as a crime, that doesn’t mean that you can’t go to Small Claims court. A bounced check is worth up to three times it’s face amount in damages.

How should I present the “tear sheet” copies of my images that appear in printed materials?
PRINTED PORTFOLIO
Should I tear out the pages of magazines and place them in my portfolio book? Or maybe scan them and print them onto photo paper?
Online Portfolio
For online examples, I probably have no choice but to scan the original (unless the publisher provides PDF copies, JPEG, etc.)
What do you think?
Six of my photos were published in the Summer 2008 edition of “Belly Dance, a Raqs Sharqi Magazine.”
Well, actually there is a dispute about one image; it is credited to another photographer, but since he was stationed at a different building (same venu) that day, and it does look like one I submitted, I’m pretty sure this was just an attribution error by the publisher.
http://bellydancemag.com/
This is a quarterly magazine, and my images have appreared in many previous editions; this is the first edition to be distributed widely at retail, i.e. Barns and Noble. It previously had limited availability in specialty shops and via subscription.

It is common to be confused about the proper usage of images. Because it is easy to copy photos, drawings, and other graphic files off the Internet for re-use doesn’t mean that this is proper or allowed. In fact, it could even lead to the user being responsible for hefty fees and even fines.
Creative Commons was organized to help us sort through these challenges.
In general, under current copyright laws in the US, the copyright belongs to the ‘creator.’ So for photos, I consider this to be the person who pushed the button to make the exposure.
If you are the subject of a photo, that does not mean you own the ‘rights’ to your own image. Sorry to tell you that. At the same time, this does not allow the copyright owner to sell your image to anyone. If used for commercial purposes (to sell another product) then permission would be needed for any recognizable person in the photo. This is most commonly supported by a signed “Model Release.”
